The Sea is Flat

Throughout civilization, the sea has represented a chaotic and dangerous force to humankind. It’s sheer unpredictability and devastating power cannot be withstood. But this chaos will not last. We believe in a future where the chaos will be tamed and the sea will be flat, undisturbed before the feet of the divine.

About the Ballet

The Sea is Flat by Julianna Rubio Slager is a ballet that draws inspiration from nautical folklore, blending classical ballet with a modern narrative twist. The ballet captures the sea's duality: its calm and beauty, as well as its potential for danger and mystery. Rubio Slager infuses the performance with an exploration of human curiosity and fear, often conveyed through fluid, wave-like movements and shifts in tempo that mirror the sea's rhythms.

One of the ballet's unique aspects is its minimalistic staging, which focuses the audience's attention on the dancers' bodies as they mimic the sea's ebb and flow. The choreography is detailed, with dancers often moving as a single entity, embodying waves and currents, then breaking apart to represent the unpredictability of the ocean.

The Ezio Bosso score complements the performance beautifully, alternating between serene and suspenseful, adding to the narrative tension. Rubio Slager’s work leaves the viewer with a sense of wonder and a renewed respect for the sea as a character in its own right—both captivating and mysterious.
